Is CCTV Still Effective?

I was asked today if CCTV was still an effective deterrent? By default, my answer is yes, of course it is…but it did get me thinking – is it? The proper answer is that it depends upon the problem you’re trying to solve.  It is true, certainly, that a CCTV system will have many benefits, and relatively few downsides, cost aside.

Fit for Purpose CCTV, Not any CCTV

I mention cost because that immediately brings me to something I consider to be THE absolute priority in respect of any CCTV system.  There is a BIG world of difference between “a CCTV System” and one which is fit for purpose.

Putting this in perspective, there is a world of difference between the kit you’ll find in a local B&Q, and the equipment a professional CCTV installer can supply and fit.  Yes, there’s a cost difference too – but that’s where the oldest adage of them all comes in “You get what you pay for“.

But professional CCTV installation has other advantages too.  For example – when something goes wrong, a professional installer will be there, backing the installation up with service and maintenance.  Design – a professional CCTV installer such as Accord will know about the Data Protection Act, and will keep the design of your CCTV legal.

Then, of course, there is perception.  Picture yourself or a colleague standing in front of a court and trying to convince them that the blurry, almost visible image is identifiable as the person in the dock.  So, yes, a properly installed and professionally designed CCTV system is more expensive, but it is an investment that often pays itself off very quickly.
